BOI Reports on 3-Year Success of LTR Visa: Key Figures and Statistics (September 2025)

On September 11, 2025, the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) released a report detailing the performance of the Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa program over its first three years. According to the announcement, the program has successfully attracted high-potential foreigners, contributing significantly to the national economy.

The BOI report highlights two primary achievements since the program’s launch on September 1, 2022:

  1. Visas Approved: Over 7,000 LTR visas have been approved.
  2. Economic Impact: The program has generated over THB 23 billion (approx. USD 651 million) in economic value.

Economic Impact: A Breakdown of the THB 23 Billion

The BOI’s report shows the THB 23 billion economic impact comes from four main sources:

  • Direct Spending (THB 13.2 billion): This is money spent by LTR visa holders on their living costs, goods, and services within Thailand.
  • Direct Investment (THB 8.1 billion): This is capital invested into the Thai economy by applicants in the ‘Wealthy Global Citizen’ and ‘Wealthy Pensioner’ categories.
  • Income Tax (THB 800 million): This consists of income taxes paid by individuals working in Thailand under the ‘Highly-Skilled Professionals’ category.
  • Visa Fees (THB 351 million): This is the revenue generated directly from the LTR visa application and processing fees.

LTR Visa Holder Demographics

The report also included statistics on the geographical origin of the approved applicants:

  • Europe: 42%
  • USA: 19%
  • Japan: 9%
  • China: 5%
  • India: 4%

Policy Adjustments and Future Plans

The BOI attributes the program’s steady growth to policy enhancements approved by the Cabinet in January 2025. These adjustments, which included expanding eligibility to foreign instructors in educational institutions, reportedly doubled the number of applications from the “Wealthy Global Citizen” category compared to the previous year.

Looking forward, the BOI stated its intention to further improve services by integrating various e-Service systems (e-Visa, e-Work Permit) for a comprehensive “End-to-End Service.” This initiative is supported by the new Thailand Investment and Expat Services Center (TIESC), which opened in March 2025 at One Bangkok to serve as a one-stop service hub for investors and visa holders.
